It’s New Year’s Eve, Nick and Nora Charles have returned to the West Coast, and the philandering hubby of Nora’s cousin has gone missing. Round up the unusual suspects. The stars (plus the four-footed one!), writers and director of The Thin Man reunite for a giddy second comedy whodunit. Myrna Loy is Nora, who by all accounts doesn’t scold, doesn’t nag and looks far too pretty in the morning. William Powell is Nick, retired from sleuthing but hardly retiring when it comes to a case more scrambled than the 3 A.M. eggs he whips up. And rising star James Stewart leads a tip-top supporting cast. “This is a fine way to start the New Year,” Nick says as he springs Nora from lockup. Indeed, it is.

Unlike Disney’s other sequls to their classic films, this follow-up to the 1953 version of Peter Pan debuted in theaters. World War II has turned Wendy’s preteen daughter, Jane, into a realist, a girl who insists there’s no need for stories and fun while London is crumbling. Hook kidnaps Jane (thinking she’s Wendy) and returns to “the second star to the right” to foil Pan. Alas, the film doesn’t build on this new story line (the London scenes have the most emotional impact), and what follows is a thin reworking of the original. On the plus side, a clever octopus takes over from that old crocodile, and Jane turns out to be a solid–and modern–role model. Those from ages 4 to 9 who have been brought up on the original should enjoy these adventures, even if the story, like Peter himself, “hasn’t grown up.” The 72-minute film is shown with the delightful 1948 short “Pluto’s Fledgling.” –Doug Thomas

Having apparently anointed himself the American cinema’s poet of decadence, filmmaker Larry Clark follows his critically acclaimed Kids with yet another tour through the darker regions of American squalor. Another Day in Paradise–even the title screams of amateurish irony–may be powerfully acted by a fine cast of new and familiar faces, but how many times can we eavesdrop on the lives of murderous, self-destructive heroin junkie thieves before we just get morosely depressed? James Woods and Melanie Griffith are superb as a pair of surrogate parents to the young couple (Vincent Kartheiser, Natasha Gregson Wagner) whom they recruit as accomplices in a series of robberies and dangerous deals, but what exactly is the point of this overindulgent, gutter-mouthed, and ultimately sickening portrait of sickening people? Clark may be good at providing an authentic vision of America’s ugly underbelly, but before this movie’s half over you’re likely to be screaming, “Enough already!” By the time Kartheiser’s character has finally escaped from his dreadful “parents,” it’s clear that Clark has very little story to tell, and not much of it is really worth telling. As for why Woods’s character gets such a kick out of saying “Boo-Yah!”–well, your guss is as good as ours. –Jeff Shannon

A film event inspired by Cirqu du Soleil. Alegria is the touching story of Frac (Rene Bazinet), a street mime who has lost all love for his art and life, deciding to end it all by lying in front of an oncoming train. When his 11-year-old friend Momo (Clipper Miano) insists on joining the suicide attempt, Frac must save them both. The train carries a traveling circus, and when it stops, Frac catches sight of Giulietta (Julie Cox), the troupe’s beautiful lead singer and performer. Frac falls instantly and rapturously in love, but to pursu Giulietta, he must overcome her father, Fleur (Frank Langella), the circus leader who disapproves of Frac. When Giulietta abandons the troupe to be with Frac and help save Momo from an abusive taskmaster who forces young children to sell flowers on the street, the wonderful cirqu falls apart. Realizing that Giulietta must return, she and Frac help Fleur understand that the mission of the cirqu is to console a suffering world. The show, like life, must go on. 93 minutes.

Seed Of Chucky review!

If you haven’t heard of Seed Of Chucky, here’s a quick plot:
Yep, that ugly toy with the killer’s instinct is back for a fifth round of irreverent bloodshed in Seed of Chucky. Chucky and his plastic partner Tiffany are reanimated by their child, a gentle doll of indeterminate gender who’d prefer that his parents stopped their knife-wielding ways. No such luck. In an attempt at irony that also includes John Waters as a tabloid reporter, Jennifer Tilly (who also voices Tiffany) is asked to play herself, a B-grade actress tired of being stuck in a movie filled with murderous dolls. She courts rap star Redman, playing himself, when she hears he’s looking for someone to play the mother of Jesus in a new film. Chuck, Tiffany, and spawn naturally interrupt such ridiculous plans. Writer/director Don Mancini has the trio doing things you have to see to believe, including a vivid disembowelment and a human impregnation featuring a turkey baster filled with, you gussed it, the seed of Chucky. It’s junk, sure, and tension-free, but Tilly’s willing self-debasement is fairly jaw-dropping. If you’re so inclined, her shameless decision to play along may be reason enough to suffer the consequnces. –Steve Wiecking
If you like Brad Dourif, then you’ll LOVE Seed Of Chucky! Watch it for the first time, or just watch it again! I really enjoyed this movie.
